A few weeks ago Susan Modaress, Jonathan Bregel, and I (Khalid Mohtaseb) set out to Venice, Louisiana for 7 days to cover the Gulf of Mexico oil spill story for the satellite network Press TV. We flew into New Orleans, rented a car, and drove 2 hours before reaching our final destination. We were brought on to shoot, edit, and transmit 6 three minute stories, as well as shoot general b-roll and interviews with locals, experts, and officials in and around the Gulf.

We were debating whether to go with the traditional ENG route or shoot entirely on DSLR. There’s been quit a bit of talk in the past few months about whether or not DSLR is a functional format to shoot news/run & gun footage with. This to me seemed like a subjective argument, depending on many factors and  we wanted to experience it first hand before taking sides on this debate. We also wanted a more cinematic way to tell the story considering the fact that the BP oil spill had already become the biggest environmental disaster in US history.

We ended up going with 1 5D Mark 2 and 1 7D, both equipped with Zacuto handheld gear and just about every accessory to make it work. We captured audio using the Shure 3 channel mixer rigged to the 5d and the Rode NTG3 shotgun mic was used as a handheld mic. Check out the photos of our rigs below.

Because of its strategic location all major networks and service providers were based in Venice, with a few in Port Fourchon and its surrounding areas. Throughout the week we were approached by almost every producer & shooter all curious to learn about the format we were using. Some had already known about this technology but for most this was their first time seeing it put to work. We got nothing but positive feedback from everyone. Below is a photo of us talking with the NBC, AP, and Fox cameramen about the DLSR workflow.

Check out the 5D lined up next to a trail of ENG cameras during a press conference with the Governor of Louisiana

The last 4 days of the shoot were spent entirely on a boat traveling along the Gulf Coast. We had the chance to interview many of the local fisherman (who are now working as oil cleaners) and hear their stories first hand. We also got an up close look of the magnitude of the spill and the significant amount of lives that will be effected in the years to come.

Overall the shoot went very smoothly and we all learned allot. I will try and post some footage within the next few weeks or so.
