Next Level Pictures shoots Healthy Living promo.

A couple of weeks ago Next Level Pictures was contacted by healthy living expert Pooja Mottl to shoot/produce a promo for her new business, Mindfully21.  This was our first official job through the new Next Level Pictures, and it was a great gig to kick it off. I (Jonathan Bregel) directed the promo, Khalid was the Director of Photography, and Next Level Pictures was the production company.  

In the early phases of pre-production we discussed shooting RED but when I put the initial shot-list together, the 5D/7D proved to be the perfect tools for this job.  We had a lot of shots to get both days so we shot with 3 cameras, all of Next Level Pictures 5D and 7D rigs. Pictured below is Khalid with one of our 3 5D/7D rigs placed on our new "dope-beast" Kessler CineSlider. All Photos taken by Ed Chan.


Pictured below is Pooja with our makeshift bike mount which worked incredibly, one of my favorite shots of the day. This was another reason why we chose to shoot 5D/7D.

Our first day of shooting included 6 locations, 3 we were able to get permits, 3 we couldn’t. That being said, we decided to shoot with a very minimal/portable crew to draw less attention from bystanders/police/security. It was simply 6 of us; Steadicam, 1st AC, Briese tech, driver/assistant, Khalid, and myself. We discussed the way the day would go in the morning and got the shooting style nailed down right away. We basically got all cameras, steadicam, and Kessler CineSlider prepped at the first location, piled in the 15-passenger van ready to shoot, and hopped out at our next location ready to roll with no setup time. This was the way the entire day went down. The fact that we got away with shooting in some of the locations that we did is pretty awesome. We also managed to get the best out of the sun that I have ever gotten on any shoot. Every location we went to, the light was perfect for what we were shooting. It did rain for about 2 hours, but we were shooting in a tunnel at that time. When we wrapped the tunnel there was beautiful sunshine and a wetdown! Thanks mother nature! I have to say that I have never had such a smooth day of shooting before. I’m not just saying that because I want to promote Next Level Pictures, but it truly couldn’t have gone any better!

On day 2 we had 3 scheduled locations. The first location was a daylight film studio where we shot some of Pooja’s yoga and workout routines. I have to give a huge shout out to the Kessler CineSlider for making most of the shots at this location. Camera movement played a HUGE role in this promo. Being that this is a 90 second promo, we tried to keep all of the shots interesting and the CineSlider helped us achieve this.  I specifically remember one shot where we had a step-ladder in the foreground of the CineSlider and the client was loosing his mind at how much of a difference such a subtle movement/foreground element can add to a shot. Along with the CineSlider, we had David Ellis on steadicam doing his thing. We simply lit with 1x 2.5k open faced 140 Briese so that David could have the whole studio to run around and get some crazy shots with the steadicam. I think the combination of the steadicam and CineSlider is one that I will request on every shoot that I can, they compliment each other so well. 

Our second location was world famous Chef David Bouley’s kitchen. This kitchen was absolutely incredible. All we had to get was a few shots of Pooja slicing numerous fruits/vegetables and again, the CineSlider proved to be King, especially for the close-up shots.

The third/final location was a contemporary room in a very nice building on Chambers Street in Manhattan. At this location we shot an interview of Pooja introducing her new business. We shot this with 3 cameras; 7D on steadicam, 5D on CineSlider, and 7D with the teleprompter. This setup allowed us to get the best possible coverage.  We had a medium shot on the teleprompter, CU dollying shots on the CineSlider, and a BTS look on the Steadicam. We were having some fun while getting set-up seeing how much weight we could put on the Kessler CineSlider before it wouldn’t be smooth anymore…we literally stacked every piece of gear we could onto the 5D and it was still as smooth as a babies ass! We ended up just keeping everything on there for the shoot because it literally didn’t make a difference with the smoothness and it felt more like a video/film camera that we are use too. That thing is a BEAST!!!

Overall, this was a very successful shoot; I’d go far enough to say that it was flawless. It’s not every day that you luck out with weather, locations, a great crew, and amazing clients. I am definitely happy to have this as our first official production as the new Next Level Pictures.

Thanks Robert. David is the man! Khalid has known his for about 6 years now, I think they worked on Khalids first film in film school together. Hope all is well on your end.

Was the bike mount simply something you fashioned up yourself? Keen to be able to mount my 7D to the bars for a shoot i'm doing later this month.

Joe,

We put the bike rig together in minutes. It was as simple as a Maffer clamp and a baby pin. Works really well on flat surfaces but kinda edgy on rugged pavement.
