My good friend and colleague Jonathan Bregel and I just got back from NAB in Las Vegas. This was our first time to attend the event and I must say it has been an incredible experience. We not only got to see some of the most intuitive new gear & technology, but got to meet with some friends and fellow filmmakers we've been wanting to meet with for a while.
This year was a very crucial time to be there as our industry is rapidly changing with ground breaking products & technologies. As most of you already know, DSLR filmmaking was definitely one of the hottest and most talked about products of the event. It seemed as every vendor or booth I walked up to had designed a toy or rig specifically made for DSLR filmmaking.
The other big thing at this years convention was 3D technology. Many of the vendors showcased 3D in a way where it attracted cinematographers from the independent market rather than just mainstream. Its crazy to think that in a few years our industry may rely heavily on 3D technology, and independent filmmakers around the world will be able to shoot in 3D for a fraction of the cost it used to be. One of the most random things that happened to me over the week was an on-camera interview put together by my buddy and fellow filmmaker Dan Chung (dslrnewsshooter.com) We were all hanging by the Zacuto booth when out of nowhere Dan surprised me and put me on the spot in front of the camera to talk with filmmaker Philip Bloom about the recent controversy my Haiti video has created on the web. We talked for about 10 minutes about Cinematic Journalism and how the way documentaries and news coverage is shot will indeed change in the very near future. I always get a bit nervous in front of the camera but I think I did fine. The interview should be up in the next week or so so be sure to check it out on Dans website/blog www.dslrnewsshooter.com.
The trip ended with a dinner party put together by the guys at Kessler Crane (Eric Kessler & Chris Beller). The names on the guest list were some of the most reputable & influential filmmakers in the business. (Vincent Laforet, Tom Lowe, Rodney Charters, Phillip Blom, Dan Chung, Tyler Ginter, Tom Guilmette, Aaron Pinto, Steve Weiss, and many more.) This was an amazing opportunity for everyone to meet, network, and simply have a good time. I owe a very big one to Eric and Chris for putting this together.
